Which type of carpet to choose?

Our victorian stone cottage renovation is now almost complete...at the stage of choosing flooring for lounge and one bedroom, all other rooms have solid oak flooring now complete.

I have been to different carpet stores, and my mind is boggling with the choice!

I have searched the previous posts on here, but not answers I need, so if anyone can help, maybe with ideas of what works for them, this would be brilliant

My wish list...
I would like a creamy/beige carpet, shortish pile as dont like the furniture indents in longer pile..I quite like berber type ( are these more comfy with thick underlay?they feel a bit "harsh")
which pile carpet would be best 80/20 wool mix or 100% polypropylene type that is guaranteed not to stain (no children or pets)
I can see the difference between a carpet at 7.99 sq m and 19.99 sq m, but how high do i go (do you really get what you pay for with carpet) or does it depend on the store pricing?

I will buy a decent underlay 9-11mm

I would really appreciate any advice on your own carpet purchases to help with my choice!! :)

I like a good Berber to be honest, hard wearing and nice.

But you have to buy what you like,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

We've got 100% wool berber and like it. Its obviously not as foot engulfing as a long haired carpet but its plenty soft enough for my feet. If you put in on a scale from a lush long pile to natural material like sea grass it would be in the middle I guess.

Ours was I think £25-30 psqm but we really wanted to make sure the carpet would be looking as good as new in 10 years when we might be thinking of moving so saving a couple of hundred pounds now would of been a false economy.

A decent 80:20 carpet can be cleaned time and time again. As others have said £25 per sq m is what you will need to consider paying. Find a good independent carpet store too who can give good advice.

Quick update..been carpet shopping today, after much more deliberation made a choice

Wool 80/20 mix, with best underlay 12mm deep, from independent store

To be honest, price was no more expensive than the large carpet stores, and much friendlier and helpful advice.

thank you to everyone who replied to my post

Exactly and you're helping local people, rather than share holders and fat cats. :)
