1st birthday party- are party bags necessary?

My daughter went to a party last week and the mother of the birthday girl had made cupcakes which she decorated with fondant icing. she popped one in a cellophane bag for each child with some sweets, tied the top with curling ribbon and tucked a balloon through the tie, was a really lovely idea that all the kids went mad over and had cost her next to nothing to produceSPC No 002 SPC(3) £285/£250 (4) £519.84/£500 (5) £768.32/£500 (6) £911.30/£600 (7) £913.23/£600 (8) £1184.82/£750 (9) £2864.04/£750 (10) £3846.25/£1000 (11) £1779.72/£1000 (12) £1596.55/£1000 (13) £1534.70/£1000 (14) £775.60/£1000 (15) £700.20/£1000 (16) £2081.34/£1000 (17) £1691.15/£1000 (18) £225/£10000

Party bags are always a good idea - for adults, too. I've never known anyone say they hate party bags if offered one.
A couple of sweets, some cake, something that will irritate the heck out of the family (like a kazoo), a lip balm for bigger ones, hand cream, etc, for adults, that kind of thing.
Older teenagers squeal with delight when they get something kiddy themed, so it's not a silly idea - and any little one will be secretly hoping for a party bag, even if they don't actually say it.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I personally would supply party bags.
For younger ones I would include :-
A fun size milky way
A helium balloon
A piece of birthday cake
A pack of crisps
Chunky crayons and colouring book
For the older ones :-
Piece of cake
Crisps
Fun size chic bar
Fancy pen/pencil/ rubber for schoolNever look down on anyone unless you are bending to help them up.....0 -

Hydrogen is a great alternative and balloons will float even more... Only draw back is that if it's exposed to a spark or flame the balloon can turn into a ball of fire!
Helium is always in short supply, some helium suppliers are having troubles as the plants are old, cylinder prices have not rapidly increased. Balloon helium is poor quality. MRI scanners use liquid helium for cooling -Totally different source and purity. Balloon helium has no impact on liquid helium supplies.0 -
We went to a 1st birthday party last week and all the guests were given a piece of cake and a massive sandcastle windmill thing in bright colours, similar to this:

I loved it as thought it was very different, my 3m old loves staring at it and all the toddlers enjoyed playing with them tooMFW!

In past years I have given children a big bag of Haribos each to take home (or those big candy lollypops) and a slice of cake.
All the children seemed delighted with them and it is better than those plastic party toys which get binned soon after.
Hope your LO enjoys the party!!I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed. Booker T Washington

Hi all, thanks again for the responses. Think I like the idea of a cupcake in a cellophane bag with sweets and things the best- thou I have never made a cake in my life so better get practising!! Think I will buy some plastic cupcake pods that I have seen to keep the cakes protected, and put a milky way and a bag of rainbow drops in- I think all of that would suit the entire age range. Trying to think of one thing non-food which would fit in the bag - which would be ok across the age range, but struggling at the moment for ideas
I like the windmill idea, but not sure it would suit the older kids. Have so far had few rsvps, so would rather keep the treats as boardly suited as possible. Thanks all:snow_laug0 -
I am doing party bags for my son's 1st birthday in just over a month. They will just have cheap tat in them (as in customary for party bags!). I am having quite a large celebration for him so am only doing party bags for the children of which there will be about 15 - ranging from 4 months to 13 years! I am going to include...
1 x piece of the birthday cake
3 x little chocolates (from a tub of celebrations or similar)
1 x mini cracker I have left from Xmas
1 x crayon pack
There will be a couple of other bits, but I am yet to find them!14th October 201020th October 20113rd December 20130 -
My friend age ranged her bags and put each child's name on it. Younger ones got crayons etc and older ones she got little packs of playing cards, small puzzles or even a cheap bookfor teenagers0
