Perfume for a Young Lady

I'm appealing to the perfumistas of the blog for some advice here

My best friend's daughter will be 16 shortly and she would like grown up presents - specifically some perfume
I don't want to spend a fortune but would like to get her some "proper" perfume rather than something gimmicky or pop star related (not her style at all)
I'm thinking probably an eau de toilette but would love your suggestions as to what to go for
Thanks:D

Not sure if it's 'gimmicky' but I used to really like the Dolly Girl perfume by Anna Sui.0

D&G light blue is nice and fresh. I like ghost sweetheart too but my OH finds it a bit sickly so I don't buy it. I love it though!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Paul Smith is very nice. I have got a bottle for my 15 year old DD for Christmas.0

Oh god, that's a difficult one as perfume is such an individual thing.
Vera Wang Princess seems to be really popular with younger women.
I love Cheeky Alice and Naughty Alice by Vivienne Westwood. The bottles look lovely too.
If you are on a budget there is good old Anais Anais which every woman seems to have owned as a teenager! One of my younger relatives was wearing it recently so it still seems to be going strong.
Does she have a favourite designer? If so, maybe she would like a perfume by them.0 -
Boots often do some little collections of different fragrances in their gift range, how about one of those. Having said that, my older kids DS1 (15) and DSD (17) both chose CK One in preference to any other.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Jean-Paul Gaultier's Classique is lovely, and very popular, but unfortunately it's not cheap! Not sure what your budget is for her present, but I managed to get a small 20ml bottle of the EDT version for £25-ish the other day.0

My teenagers current favourites are Vera Wang Princess, Marc Jacobs Daisy and Coco Chanel Mademoiselle0

I agree with the suggestions of Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs, they're popular. They're on the pricier end though, around £35.
For the same price, The Perfume Shop sells this:

You get a number of samples and a voucher for a full size of your favourite one. The perfumes in it aren't as new as I assume this is from Christmas 2011 and that there'll be a new one this year.
I used to work in a pharmacy so I sold perfume and Jean Paul Gaultier and D&G Light Blue were bought by older ladies (30+) in my experience. I loved Tommy Girl as a teenager (I'm 24 now) but that's probably a bit out-of-fashion now.
This is my current favourite perfume:

It's a great price for 100ml (only comes in one size) and it's quite fruity. There's a number of different scents in the range with different numbers. It might be available cheaper elsewhere, I paid close to £30 in duty-free.0 -
Lacoste Touch of Pink used to be popular as a first perfume, not sure if it is still popular though.0

For a teenager, you can't go wrong with either Boss Orange, or DKNY Be Delicious. Both light fruity scents. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0
