It's better to have your parents in one piece (or even better, two seperate pieces) than a few grand in the bank.

However it would be best if you and her documented this - not because your mother may default - but because something may happen to her (God forbid).

Hi Catt, don't want to put a downer on the situation :o ,but,I know your mother has every intention of paying, what would happen if she suddenly couldn't pay? would you be able to afford to pay it for her? I ask because a similar thing happened to us a few years back,I took out a cc for my parents, then dad fell ill and couldn't afford to pay it,luckily they didn't owe much and we quickly cleared it,although they seem to have no memory of us doing this at the time  but that's another story ;)
Also the car was very expensive, would you not have felt a little better with a cheaper car? afterall their car couldn't be as bad as you say,it wouldn't have an MOT ;)
Again sorry for putting a downer on it :D

I have no idea how Mum's current car passed the MOT a few months ago.

Basically we went to £6k because she could afford the monthly repayments and wanted a new car as possible (it's 3yrs old with 10k miles on it) so that it wouldn't cause any trouble (touch wood) and it would still be tradeable when the loan is finished (I also know a lot about this make of car driving one myself so I can fix niggles easily myself).

I could afford the repayments myself if it came to it - and have ISA savings (albeit need a months notice) should I need them.

I'll just have to introduce her to the Oldstyle board a bit more than I have already. I think I might buy her a 'car' terrimundi when I have some spare money for her to save for over-payments.

    Thanks for all your support.

  • Catt I htink you have done a wonderful thing and if it keeps your mum and dad safe then of course dont beat yourself up with this.

to second the others your mum will be so proud of you and it isnt as though you went out and bought her a mercedes or something like that.

Well done babe I salute you!

You've definitely done the right thing. She won't default on you and just think about how happy (and safe) she is.

You are so strong & I'm sure you will be able to repay this extra debt in no time :)

To be honest your parents safety and well being are more important than money so I think you've done a very kind thing for them. :)

:rotfl: Thanks ZTD - made me laugh through my stress!

I don't think Dad is bad enough yet to be eligible for any disability allowances or cars etc. He wouldn't even apply for a blue badge a month or so ago. he's bad enough to be unable to drive though and is becoming unable to do up buttons or cut meat. They are very proud and won't claim anything until they really have to, which having both worked for 40 years each doesn't seem right - they've never claimed anything, and neither have I.

I think you've done the right thing too. I helped my Mum out a few years ago (she's disabled) by helping her buy a car. Rather than go for what she could afford we went a few steps up and got one properly set up for her (at this point may I point out she's not elligible for a disability car as she earns too much but not enough if you see what I mean). Fast foward a couple of years and she was hit head on by a truck. The car we'd chosen for her saved her life. She asked the policeman what would have happened if she had been driving her old car........don't think you want to know the answer. So give yourself a pat on the back for thinking about the safety of both your parents as there are some complete nutcases on the roads.
I guess your Mum doesn't qualify for a disability car as she earns too much like mine?
