Faulty Tyre repair

Had my tyre repaired by National tyres at Christmas, have now developed a slow leak through the same hole. National say cannot repair a tyre twice in the same place. There is about 4mm of tread left. There quote for a new tyre is £175, kwikfit / local independent quote £141.
What can I expect from in way of recompense from National for faulty repair ?

Nothing, you can't prove the repair is faulty and 10 months have passed so it is up to you prove it.

You would have to show that they were negligent.
The tyre failing again is not in itself proof of negligence. It may well be that a small proportion of repairs carried out with the requisite skill will fail.0 -
4mm of tread? Only about 1000 miles off replacement anyway.0

National tyres are not professional tyre repairers, sounds like the tyre needed a major repair first time round, not a glorified bicycle inner tube patch.
There's nothing you can do about it now, and at 4mm its probably not worth the cost of a major repair.
Just remember if something happens again to seek out one of the few small workshops who can repair tyres.0 -
You could try being a pain in the bottom and seeing if that gets you anything: the squeaky hinge gets the oil and all that.
The alternative is that you pay up AFAICS.0 -

You're sure on this rather sweeping statement? I worked for another major tyre chain and we had to do repairs to BSAu144d (as it was) using the approved plug & patch method, and had to pass an approved City & Guilds course before I was allowed near a car without close supervision. There are still some people who take pride in a job well done, and not just those with a small workshop under the railway arches!
I'd be surprised if National were any different, with all the implications of doing a substandard repair.
Having said that, normally wouldn't expect a repair to fail so long after and I think after 10 months it'll be difficult to get any redress.
OP, appears the tyre's cheaper elsewhere, so would suggest you vote with your feet...0 -

They repair them the same as I, a qualified mechanic, was taught to repair them.
What major repair did it need? Do you even know what you're on about?0 -

I'm not talking about a minor repair which is what a plug and patch is, compared to a professional tyre repair it is a bodge.
Its quite obvious the OP's damage was beyond the scope of the tyre fitting centre, or the repair would not have failed so quickly.

You apprently are a qualified mechanic so you repair cars, you are not a qualified or time served tyre repair specialist.
I am, or rather was, so yes i do know what i am talking about.
Its quite obvious the tyre needed to stripped, spread and closely examined, then depending on damage found, the damaged area rasped out to provide a key for new uncured rubber filler, which exposes the cords for closer inspection still, then if still repairable a reinforced patch would be assigned for inside, the inside buffed and the new uncured patch fitted.
The outside carefully filled with uncured rubber.
The tyre will then be cured for so long in the correct sized mould, then the outside buffed to perfection and if it had tread damage the original tread recut into the new rubber.
That is a major repair.
I properly repaired hundreds of tyres bodged with plug and patch kits that failed far sooner than this one has.
Plug and patch are OK for a simple nail hole, BUT the tyre needs to be stripped from the wheel and thoroughly examined inside every time, i sincerely hope those who use these kits do this.
Unless the tyre is stripped off, no one can know exactly what damage has been done, that 1/2" nail removed might have been 4" long when it went in and has been worn down as it worked its way out, gradually ripping the inside of the tyre to shreds with every revolution and flexing of the tyre.0 -

Not just any tyre repair, this is an M&S tyre repair!0
