Whats the best number to get info from the tax office

hi all

My husband is self employed and looking into having additional help. The guy in question is gonna work 16 hours a week. also is it true no tax is required because he is only doing 16 hours a week??:o

How do i work this on my husbands accounts books. I actually do the books. So unsure on where to start.

if you have a telephone number for the tax office, then even better.

thanks guys

If you pay your employee less than £107 a week and they don’t have another job elsewhere - or other taxable income such as a pension - you don't have to do anything.

In the books, you put it down as wages. You issue a payslip every week/month depending on how you're paying them detailing the deductions if there are any.

If you do pay over £107 a week or they have another job/taxable income, you need to register for PAYE.

This page tells you all you need to know including employee rights.

That link is for people working in your home, such as cleaners or domestic help. I have no idea if it also covers an employee working as part of your business.
    It's someone else's fault.

It does because the pay is under the PAYE level. The reason I linked to that page is because it is in relatively plain english.

  • Have you been to the HMRC website? There is lots of very helpful information there about becoming an employer and about taking on new employees.
