ESA into Employment - Back to Work Benefits

Hi everyone. I wasn't sure whether to post this here or on the Employment, Jobseeking & Training Board, but I've received some really useful advice here in the past, so hoped to get a bit more help.

I have been on ESA since July 2011. ATOS WCA in November 2011 and was placed in the WRAG for a year.

I feel able to return to work and have found out yesterday I have been successful in an interview.

It will be full time and just over 20K a year.

So..... I was wondering what 'back to work' benefits I would be entitled to.

Is it the 4 week run on for Housing and Council Tax benefit and the Job Grant? I've looked on the Direct Gov site, but don't find it very user friendly - not as friendly as here :)

as long as you fit the criteria

Return to work credit £40 per week for 52 weeks
Job grant £100 for single claimants £250 for couple with child
run on with housing benefit and ct benefit if you were in receipt of that whilst on benefit

This is one reason not to jump from ESA to JSA, if you still qualify.
If you can get a job directly from ESA, you might qualify for the above, but if you move to JSA, then into work, you will not.

(Clearly, if there is a notifiable change of circumstances, you must do so, but not everyone who fails the work capability test is actually incapable of work)
  • If you've been on ESA since July 2011, then your taxable income for 2011/2012 will likely be very low. Look into claiming Working tax credits as there is a 10K disregard on the difference between last year's income and this year's.
  • Thanks everyone, especially Two4! Had completely forgotten about Tax Credits. Prior to going on ESA in July 2011, I had worked for a couple of weeks.... but between April and the July was mainly on JSA.

    Thanks again.
  • my sister went from esa to jsa and was told she will get the grant and weekly payments. you don't get it, if you have a job in between, even if only for a few weeks.
As long as you go from one benefit to the other, you will get the money.
and congratulations on getting a job!

You won't get RTWC if your earnings will be over about £15k pa, I think.

Sadly (for the OP) you are correct.
