My rent is high but also approriate for the are i live in. I could reduce it a little by moving to a flat, but the cost of moving would be impossible for me to find at the moment and the outcome would only be about £50 a month if that.
I'm not paying any debts to my credit cards at the moment (this is the first month i've defaulted)
I've done a letter to them all and am awaiting there reply. i'm worried though because i can offer then so little.
I'm not sure if i could live on my income without debts..worrying!
I would like to avoid bankrupty if at all possible as in my tenancy agreement it states 'that you can not continue to live at this address as a bankrupt'. Again how am i supposed to afford a move or even find a property to rent?

from what iguess you would be better off on the dole or the sick with something like depression as that way your costs come down etc. !!!!
the longer you are working the more of a debt you will run up !!!!!

Try not to worry about this. I was told the minimum amount creditors are likely to accept is £1 and I have been paying the Halifax £1 a month on three accounts witha debt £23,000.

The payment is a "token" and means exactly that. In the letter have you also asked tyourt creditors to stop Interest and charges?

If not take a look at the sample letters at nationaldebthelpine.co.uk

Again the CCCS would be able to send you much more info on this and the rules governing it.

Thanks Crown. i haven't asked in my letters for interest etc to be stopped, but i will.
I don't want this to start into a political debate but the amount of people who say i would be better off not working is worrying.
The government encourages single mothers to work which is what i've done since my child was 7. i've worked long and hard and got nowhere, except several steps backwards and one or two sideways.
I have too much pride to just stop working ; pride comes before a fall..??!!

  • Just a few quick questions. Do you ever feelc down ? do you ever feel you are suicidal ? do your sleeping patterns change? Are you always anxiuos ? If so then you more than likely suffering from depression. Nip down your gp and tell him. he will sign you off sick. Take a rest and in the meanwhile apply for incapacity benefit and counciltax/housing benefit!!!! Trust me it will be worth it in the end !!!!!

    Hi Miky,

Well my post is a "hey theres worse things happen" one!

Seriously, I'm in a huge amount of debt, I also went to payplan for advice and have ended up doing a debt management plan through them. It does take time to sort out but have they not advised you to stop paying any of your debts until the plan is set up? Thats what they did with me and if they havent suggested the same to you I suggest you speak to them. At the moment I am paying back £89.50 a month on £22k of debt, which will take me until 2027 to pay back, but at least I know I am going to get there someday.

The best advice I can give to you is to sit tight with payplan, it does take time but once its all sorted you will hopefully feel like a weight has been lifted, I know I did. I used to worry about being taken to court by my creditors in the time that my debt management plan took to be set up but it isnt a process that creditors go to quickly and therefore you shouldnt worry, I made myself ill last year stressing about it all and you really shouldnt, it will get sorted like I said it just takes time. If any of your creditors write to you dont look at the letters just send them straight to payplan, and if they phone you tell them that you are currently sorting out a debt management plan with payplan and they will be in touch soon, whatever you do dont get into a war of words with your creditors, they will try and hassle you to pay up but if they do put the phone down! Payplan will sort everything out, and if your circumstances change they re brilliant with sorting that out to, you just write and tell tham its so easy.

Hope you get on ok, please dont think you are the only person in this situation because you aren't, if you want to ask anything about payplan please PM me, I could talk all night about them, they ve helped me no end.

What is actually wrong with my attitude ? If one has depression then one should seek medical help. It could even be that the op does not realise the what the signs of depression are and so.

    Hi Miky36,

I have a suggestion that nobody seems to have come up with yet (or maybe I've missed something). Your wages are extremely low, have you considered working extra hours or getting a better paid job? You say that if you worked more you'd lose the tax credits, but if you can earn more than £160 a month extra (after deductions), you're ahead arent you?

To be honest it's no wonder you're in trouble with an income of £577 a month - this is the root of your problem!

    TheAble,

A Good suggestion but one problem, more hours would probably = more child care costs + less tax credits = less real money.

    OP,

You come across as a very proud person that you are working, and I for one commend you on this but ... really are you any better off working ? if going to work means you have no money and increasing debts that could result in bankruptcy and difficulty getting another job ..... Id go on the dole.

Life is for living and at the moment it seems you are stuck between the Rock and the hard place, it may not be the best way out but really looking at the situation either way your not really going to win Unless you get a job that pays considerably more and this is likely to be full time meaning increased child care costs increased travel etc.

Hope you find this post of some help.
