anyone have 'coir' matting carpets ?

we need to re-carpet our house, 2 flights of stairs, and 4 bedrooms so needs to be able to withstand heavy duty traffic. i like the look of coir matting but i just wondered how comfy it was to walk on and what your opinions on it was?

many thanks

I like the look of it too, but just wonder how easy it is to clean as I've seen it stained badly in other people's houses.

Oh girl, I'd definitely reconsider then! We ended up putting wood floors in, just makes it easier to clean up.

Coir matting is expensive and is really for entrance areas, in order to wipe your feet on when they are wet and stop dirt trailing into buildings.

There are many heavy duty carpet types available for what you need to achieve. You may wish to consider a wool berber style. This looped pile type carpet is very hard wearing, it looks good, and because it is made from wool it cleans readily. Carpets made wholly from man-made fibres can often cause static build-up, so best to avoid these. A blend of 80% wool and 20% man-made fibres is a popular compromise.

If you go for a conventional tufted carpet then wearability will be dictated by how close the tufts are to eachother. If you can easily part the pile and see the backing then that will not be such a good carpet and it will tend to flatten after a short period.

Don't be under the illusion that good quality carpet has to be expensive because this isn't necessarily so.

I like Berber carpet and that is what we have now in the bedrooms, but it doesnt look as natural as coir.

I love the coir/sisal carpets as they provide a "neutral" background and it's easy to match your decor to it. They're also very hardwearing.

With bare feet, they can feel a little harsh at first, until you get used to it. I quite like the feel - rather like having a foot massage :rotfl:

But ... they are prone to water staining and anything that can stain gets trapped inside the texture of the carpet. So ... mopping up spillages is unlikely to be 100% successful and if you do remove all the offending substance, you could end up with a water stain!

There is a wool carpet that has the appearance of coir/sisal matting, which might be worth considering. I'll see if I can find a link to something I looked at last year ....
