Water damaged/rotting bathroom skirting boards

I am decorating the bathroom but have found that two separate pieces of the wood skirting board are extremely water damaged. The layer underneath the paint was black. When I tried to remove the pieces of wood they just crumbled and are soaked through inside (the inside is brown not black like the top layer).
I was thinking of replacing the entire skirting with white PVC but am worried about how it will look with the wooden door frame. Also worried about cost.
I don't see the point in replacing with wood because it will probably be damaged again (they are next to the bath and are frequently splashed a lot).
Does anyone have any advice? PVC would be so much easier but not sure how it will look. The suite is white, the bottom half of the room is tiled white and the top half is painted white.
Thanks!

That degree of rot is not from a bit of splashing! Investigate the cause rather than treating the symptoms!

The apartment is three years old. When we moved in in April there were small black marks on the paint and I knew it was probably water damage/rot but have only just has time to decorate it this week.
Basically there is a small dip in the corner of the bath, where you can put soap etc. It collects water whenever the shower is used (shower is over the bath) and it runs down and forms a pool round that bit of skirting board. We have been careful and always put a towel down or wipe it up straight away but have a feeling the last tenants weren't as careful. The rest of the skirting in the room is absolutely fine.0 -
If the apartment is 3 years old then is should still be covered by some sort of guarantee.0

Not if it's due to mis-use - e.g continually using a facility/feature that would inevitably lead to damage elsewhere.
The possible defect in the design of the bath might be covered (if any warranty exists) but not the damage due to water :cool:0
