Can I appeal a DD non-payment charge?

times are a little tough and my bank accounts are close to zero a lot of the time.

Recently I had a DD bounce, it's not a normal DD it's a paypal DD, which happens automatically and there's around 5-10 day wait until it reflects on my bank account. So it's not always easy to manage these as they are all over the place.

My account dipped to -.47 for a bit, but I happened to log onto the account on the day it happed and immediately put some money into the acount from another account using faster payments.

The DD did not bounce it got paid, I would have heard from paypal had the DD not been paid and there would have been a DD reversal on the account.

Halifax have charged me £10 for tipping into -.47 which I think is unfair.

The description of the fine reads "DD return charge", the payment did not get "returned" at all.

Is this something I can make a claim on? Or will the bank refuse to budge? I figured I'd write here as I can get a faster response than spending ages on the phone.

First time offence ? Ask nicely and you should get it refunded.

If not, then perhaps find an account with lower fees/a buffer if you're living close to the edge?

I would certainly go into a branch. Ultimatly its down the their discretion but over 47p and assuming that you rarely get them or first time you have had a charged, I shoudlnt see why they wont.

I would try the be nice approach over the all guns blazing way.
  • Strictly speaking they can charge you, but as advised, ask nicely and it may get refunded.
  • I would definitely ask for a refund. Since you were only overdrawn for a few hours they should refund you. Fees are normally applied at the end of each working day so since you lodged money it would be unfair to charge you.
