Sky/Freeview etc

Hello all

I must say, after reading so many posts where this comes up, please DO NOT tell people to go out and get a freeview box when in the process of advising them to cancel Sky.

Your Sky box IS a freeview box (ie ''Sky Digital'') and you can view free to air channels (now even including Sky 3) for nothing.

There is never any need for a Freeview box when you have a Sky box. It is an unnecessary expense.

Thank you

Don't some providers take the box back?
When we had Sky disconnected (many years ago) the box was, unceremoniously, reclaimed by Sky. Things may have changed now.
We don't even have Freeview, but we do have Hotbird for the free European Channels.

  • When we got sky two years ago we had to purchase the box so the box is now ours. Not sure about in general.

  • If you take out a 12 month contract with sky then the equipment is yours after 12 months. With cable it is a bit different. You rent the equipment so when you leave the company you have to return it. they will either collect or send you packaging to return it in !!!!!!!!!

BUT we got £55 for our sky box on ebay. If you can get a freeview box off freecycle or ebay then you're going to be making some money out of it!!

Thanks for that information - I wasn't aware of this at all. It's hopefully great news for me, as I've got a Sky+ box in use and an old Sky box stored in a cupboard. I'll have to give up my Sky subscription very soon, so it may well have to come out of hibernation. ;)

I've noticed that some of the channels I watch aren't available on FTA (free to air) but are on FTV (free to view) - for instance, E4 (can't seem to find mention of Livingtv :( ). Would I be able to use a Sky/Sky+ box for the FTA channels & the Sky box (or another freeview box) to see the FTV channels if they were connected to the same tv, or could I only have one per tv?

Also, do you know of a site with the updated channel listings available for FTA & FTV channels? Some of them seem a few months old. Thanks. :)

Once your subsription ends as long as you keep your expired card in the sky box you will be able to watch some like bbc1,2,3,4 itv/channel 5 etc. this is regardless of which box you have. The other thing is soon the contract between sky and the bbc expire and bbc channels will no longer be available on sky. Just a though if sky can pull channels like sky one etc off cable it will not be log when the bbc does the same with sky !!!!

is that not everyone can get freeview even if they have the equipment.

I can't get it for example, but mum who is 4 miles up the road can get a partial service whereas at my late parents in law - 4 miles away but in the opposite direction to mums - can get the full service.

  • strictly speaking, you do not get Freeview through your Sky box, you get Freesat

Its pretty much the same, but there are a few channels on freeview that you can't get through freesat and vice-versa.

Freesat comes through your Sky dish, so even if you can't get good freeview coverage (which comes via your aeriel) you should be able to get freesat.

when i moved into my house the previous owners left me their sky box & dish, but took their viewing card, I had to buy a freesat viewing card which was £20, not sure if you need this if you already have a viewing card.
