Its years since I've bothered with the centre of Huddersfield, but there are plenty of attractions around, it depends largely on what your taste is. Are you wanted expensive/cheap eating places? Museumy things & visits? Shopping quaint/modern? Will you have children to entertain? What's your time limit?

Good weather enjoy gardens = http://www.oakwellhallcountrypark.co.uk/
Children = http://www.freedom-connections.co.uk/attractions/3343/view (which mistakenly lists the address as Claydon West, when it's Clayton West)

Never mind Last of the Summer Wine, it's an interesting little town anyway

Longley Farm ice-cream parlour & tea shop, and some knacky little shops, including two second hand book shops (Daisy Lane & Toll House) as well as the permanent book sale in the church. The hotel by the river, two good toy shops.

or Cannon Hall (towards Barnsley, therefore towards junctions 37 & 38 of M1)
There is a museum in the hall (free) with nice grounds & a river, a garden centre with good cafe, the Farm itself is pay to go in, but its cafe is outside of the paying area. The picturesque village of Cawthorne has two antiques shops (one with a little tea shop inside) & a pub (last time I ate there the service was vile.)

    Hope these help

thanks for that ...holmfirth sounds ok and is near where we need to go

i need to get to slaithwaite ...multimap is saying M1 then M62, would i be better off taking the 35a junction on the M1 and taking A616 to holmfirth and then onto slaithwaite?? is the A616 and back roads to slaithwaite ok , worth doing?

looks like a shorter route but then i dont know what its like there

is slaithwaite and holmfirth likely to be well signposted? dont fancy getting lost lol

No, the 35a junction off the M1 is a bit too early, I'd go for junction 37 on the A628 heading towards Manchester (its O.K. you don't get anywhere near Manchester its just the best signposting guide at this point.) Stay on A628 until it meets the A629 Halifax road. (Now you can forget Manchester & start worrying that Halifax doesn't sound right either. Its O.K. you don't go to Halifax.) Turn right onto the A629 heading towards Ingbirchworth, and Birdsedge. After Birdsedge, start looking for the road you're on being crossed by the A635. (There'll be a pub on your left, and a Petrol Station on the right, the area is known as The Sovereign) at this junction, turn left towards New Mill, and Holmfirth on the A635
When you drop down the hill into the village of New Mill, there's a squished crossroads at the bottom you're turning second right, (i.e. straight on, but it won't look like it) heading into Holmfirth. The road you've crossed at that point was the A616 that you suggested might be a good road from the M1. To navigate through & out of Holmfirth, I suggest you look for signs for Meltham If you look at a map (the Google one is pretty good) You'll see a route going Right out of Holmfirth (at the main traffic lights in the town centre) (A6024) then looking for a left, New Road which leads onto Moor Lane then Wilshaw road. New Road looks as if its taking you nowhere, particularly at the top where you'll wonder if you shouldn't have stayed in Cambridge, but after the village there, things pan out again. Meltham is signposted from the "main" road, but I'l bet you won't believe it.

If you don't feel secure with these directions, you can always use them for coming back. I really wouldn't use the M62 as either by your route or mine, you can be covering a lot of ground by the time you've looped all that way out on the M1 then the M62.

Oh, and if you have to ask the way, Slaithwaite is pronounced Slough-it (Slough to rhyme with plough, how, now etc.)

    Enjoy your trip.
