Best kitchen flooring?

Hi all, we are hoping to have our kitchen done shortly and are getting some quotes in. We are thinking of having ceramic tiles however one of the kitchen fitters suggested the laminate flooring option from Howdens that looks like tiles. He says it is a similar price depending on the tiles you go for but will cost less labour to fit. This got me thinking about kitchen floor options so I wondered what others experiences were. Do you have a preference or any views? Thanks.

labour to fit tiles and lam wont be a great difference, so trades give recomends cuz makes there job easier.
fake look tiles is far from the real thing. The difference in cost will be the adheisive etc.

Yes, he was saying the order everything from Howdens. Personally having just been out for a look I would not go for the tile effect laminate. I would however consider wood effect laminate. It would be between the wood effect laminate or a mat black sytle tile with black grout. The guy said he would charge one days labour for the Howdens laminate stuff or two days for ceramic tiles.

My kitchen is 3.5m by 3m. It took two people half a day to tile the floor with large porcelain tiles. It was a good job. It could be that he charges you the sticker price for the Howdens floor, and pockets the difference between that and the price he pays. Howdens give trades huge discounts. Alternatively he might not like tiling, and might be slow. I used professional tilers. I think you'd be better off having someone who only does tiling do the work.

Personally I much prefer porcelain tiles, but it is personal, choose what you like, you'll have to live with it. :)

Thanks Leif, I have been doing a bit of research and will be going with tiles. I have seen some of this guys work and his tiling is good so not sure what his motivation to suggest Howdens laminate is. Must be the money side of things as you suggest.

There are shiny tiles where I am now....lethal. I'm always skidding on them and nearly having accidents. I now have to walk funny in the kitchen to make sure I don't skid.

My kitchen is so small I would not have room to fall over. Just put my hand out and there would be a worktop or something lol. I would probably go for a mat finish. A black slate sort of thing. Altough textured tiles I find get dirty more easy and are harder to clean. Opinions I guess.
  • If you've got the money I think the tiles will look nicer and probably last longer, theyre a bit classier too.

I have matt grey/black textured effect. They are fab - dont look dirty as easy as my pale shiney bathroom tiles and a squirt of bleach in the mop bucket keeps the grout between them nice and fresh.

I was thinking of going with black grout as well anyway but good to know they are easy to keep clean. I only have experience with textured cream ones which appeared dirty often.
