question on van tax disc..

my partners dad got a 1400 cc car but they seem to want to charge him 135 per 6 months more than our 2800 cc car. is that normal? aslo is there not a law on vans where you can reduced or free tax disc. i am sure it used to exist. thanks for any info . x

  • Assuming the vehicles in question are less than 10 years old, then the "tax" for each would be base on the emssions. So an old 1.4 litre engine may well put out more emissions than a modern 2.8 litre engine and consequently the smaller engine vehicle has the higher tax.

Tax exempt vans, never heard of that.
  • how does that work?

What year/make/model is the van and car? Hard to give an opinion either way without that information.

Buy a pre 1973 vehicle to get free tax.

It's very unlikely that a 1.4 from the past 10 years will have worse economy (exactly the same as emissions, just expressed differently) than a 2.8 from the same period though.

    What are the cars?

Depends. If its a 1.4L petrol, a 2.8L Turbo Diesel and the van is a midsized one, the 2.8 would be considerably more economical than a flogged to death to get it to move anywhere 1.4L petrol.
