Can I mix kitchens?

Options
Hi
I wonder if anyone has done this or isn't it possible.
I really like the solid oak classic doors from B+Q but the inside of their cupboards have a tacky little motif on that would drive me mad every time I opened anything. Also, they don't seem to have as many of the organising bits and pieces that Ikea and Wickes do.

Is there any chance of getting the doors from B+Q, buying the carcasses and innards from somewhere else and getting it all to fit nicely?

Or am I living in kitchen dreamland?

B&Q IT kitchens are a 720mm height door so will not fit the Wickes 735mm Showroom kitchen cabinets.

B&Q do sell a higher grade of kitchen cabinet badged "Select" which might meet your needs.

Alternatively have a look at Crown Imperial, Howdens(MFI) as both of these have either options on the design or more subtle patterns.

Just a thought but many of the organising pieces are standard fit and can be bought as an optional add on for subsequent diy fitting if you are so minded.

Personally I have a kitchen made up of the best bits from Howdens, MFI (Tesco vouchers), Wickes and even some B&Q so it is certainly possible. In the spirit of this site it brought the cost down considerably but did require more thought and design.

The 'tacky little motif' is only a coffee bean!

It's not really that noticeable to be honest. After all, I would presume you will be putting things in your cupboards anyway - the insides aren't for looking at...

You can also order B&Q cabinets with colour-matched interiors.

Most of the 'organising' bits will be universal for STANDARD kitchen units - beware of IKEA stuff, as I'm not sure their stuff is quite the same size as everone else's.

B&Q have a lot more of them than Wickes do anyway - now they ARE useless.

The full B&Q range is available by Mail Order at low delivery costs - a lot more stuff than there is in the smaller old 'red' branches and the new 'mini warehouse' size orange ones.

  • Thanks laird and Withabix - tried to click the little button but it seems to be having none of it at the moment.
Laird, my 'problem' is that I really want that Solid Oak Classic door from B+Q and not any of their others, though. Howdens may well do something similar. I looked at their catalogue a year ago and they may be the best bet.
I agree about it being worth the extra hassle to get what you want. I've managed to save a small fortune by looking around for sink/ taps/ appliances. Well worth it.
I take your point, Withabix, about the motif but I'm old and crabby enough to know what would wind me up! (wish I could put the wink smilie in here)
I thought the colour matched interior was only for the Select range and the door I really like is an IT kitchen. Still there's no harm in asking if they can be flexible.
Thanks for the tip about the Ikea innards. I'll have to go and check the brochures again re the Wickes/ B+Q innards.

I suppose what I really want to do - put the B+Q doors on the Ikea cabinets is pretty much out of the question.

    Thanks again both.

I have to be honest I wouldn't recommend a B & Q kitchen. Perhaps other posters will have had a more positive experience but I have found mine quite bad quality for the price - they seem to chip and break easily and we are quite careful owners. I've found them quite 'cheap' quality-wise to other kitchens and would probably go for somebody like Howdens or Ikea which both have good feedback and reviews in various forums.

Agree! B&Q use 15mm carcass , Howdens / MFI use 18mm ............ might not seem a lot but in fact it is ! not sure about others.

B&Q IT kitchens changed to 18mm carcasses several years ago.

I like the B&Q units because you can buy them off the shelf so no chance of short deliveries - or even needing to wait weeks for delivery.
