Overnight Car Parking at/near Railway Stations

I often have to travel to all parts of the UK from West Essex. Up to Birmingham, Leicester and such places I drive. To Scotland N.I. etc I fly from Stansted. The problem is the bit in the middle, place like Leeds and Manchester. The train if the obvious answer but as I have to stay overnight I need to have somewhere to leave the car at or near a station which is reasonably secure. I don't want to travel the "wrong way" into London but would like to drive cross country and pick up the train at say Luton, Stevenage or similarly placed towns on the main lines.
Anyone have any ideas please as to suitable parking?
