Kos - October - Things to do/see

Hello,

We are soooo excited as going on our first holiday abroad together and my first holiday abroad for 8 years :j We are going to Kos in October and have booked it already. We were looking at trips last night however via Thomas Cook the trips are not available after the 8th October we are going on the 11th. Do you know any day out ideas that we could do, we would like to go to Bodrum and the Nissryos for the day.

Thanks for your help x

  • You can go on day trips to Bodrum, Patmos, Rhodes, other parts of kos, we stayed in kos town years ago & loved it, There is old & new town, harbour, castle, fantastic beach & food, lots to see & do in kos, go on tripadvisor there is lots of advice on there:)
  • Hi there,

Kos in October should be beautiful, still hot, you'll have a great time.

You can do the Nissyros trip yourselves if you want, catch the ferry from Kardamena over to Nissyros, then there are minibuses up to the volcano which I'm sure you can book when you arrive. I'm sure it wouldn't cost much this way.

Otherwise there are local tour operators offering the trips if you don't want to do the organising - which is what we did.
Thomas Cook just use these and charge double the cost!

Don't miss the volcano, it's amazing.

It's also worth going to the hot springs - we caught a local bus from Kos Town, and a walk down (and back up!!) the hill. Can't remember the name exactly but you will find out easily enough when you get there, if not before.

We liked the waterpark (in Mastichari I think) - clean and not too crowded - we cycled there from Tingaki, but the tour companies do trips if you prefer. Lots of people hire bikes, it's a small island and easy to get around.

Kos Town is fantastic, historic ruins right in the town centre.

We didn't go to Turkey (prefer Greece!) but there were lots of boats offering day trips from Kos Town harbour - again no need to use Thomas Cook.

I wouldn't worry too much if some of the tour companies have stopped doing trips, it won't be too difficult to sort things out yourselves using the local buses etc. And I'm sure some trips will still be running.
Have fun, wish we were going.
  • Nissryos is well worth the trip. You can book with the local companies (cheaper than Thomas Cook etc!). Great day around the volcano etc.

Bodrum is worth going to if you've never been - great Castle there and a very non-european indoor market. Very bustly.

    As for Kos itself...

Zia on the mountain is a lovely place to go in the evening (meal) for sunsets across the sea. Lots of little shops.

There are (FREE!) hot spring pools around the corner from Kos Town towards Agios Fokas. Keep following the road around the hill side. There is a car park on gravel. You have to walk down a hill and then there are is a hot spring pool from the volacano in the sea. It's always full of locals!

Kos Town has a lovely castle, the Tree of Hippocrates and many old ruins. It's a lovely place.

There is the Asklepieion as well on the outskirts of Kos Town.

Kefalos Bay is nice sleepy place with a long beach and harbour.

I recommend driving down the island past Kefalos to Aghios Theologos. It has a different look to the rest of the island, and there is a restuarent there idea for lunch. you can also go up the hill there to take pictures that overlook the whole of the south of Kos and great views od Kefalos Bay all the way up to Zia.

Kardamaina is a lively place, mostly for 18-30s, but worth going to for browsing around shops.

Personally I wouldn't with trips to Kalymnos, there is nothing really there.

I want to go on hols now :D

    Enjoy!!!
