Free Lease Extention.....????

Hi,
I posted a few weeks ago about our lease needing extending and wanting to sell.
We currently have a lease of around 58 years. We wrote to the management company asking how much it would be to extend, we then received a letter from the Freeholder asking for information on the property and for a cheque to have a valuation done. We have yet to send a cheque or letter a
we are just waiting for payday .
Any who, yesterday I came home and sorted through the post for our flat and the flat downstairs ( who have also made enquiries in regards to the lease extenstion) both had a letter from the property management company. Our letter states that we owe £133 for ground rent between Septemeber 12 to May 13, this is due to an increase in ground rent due to the lease extension. Currently our ground rent is £50 per annum and due in May......I called the management company straight away but as it was 5.30 not many people were in the office and I was told I would be called back today, but the women I spoke to did say "it looks like something has gone terribly wrong!"
I got impatient so I called them back just now, I was advised we have to wait for them to email the Freeholder to find out what is going.....Surely as the management company who sent the letter, they should know what is going on??
I suppose my question is, can they do an extension without us knowing about it? Wouldn't we have to agree the terms of teh extension etc?
Deep down I know it will probably turn out to be a an Error on their part, but can't help having the hope that they have magically extended the lease without us having to pay a penny!...One can dream I suppose!:D
PS Our downstairs neighbour had the same letter saying he owed £89 due to a lease extension.

Their client is the freeholder and it is they from whom they take instructions.
You have queried it and they have to ask them the question so don't fret overly- FH's often negotite these directly with leaseholders and notify the MA of the change to any billings as they often know nought about the deal until told.
Take a deep breath and let them get an answer...:)
Sadly no you dont have an extension.Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.
Actively hunting down the person who invented the imaginary tenure, "share freehold"; if you can show me one I will produce my daughter's unicorn0
