Sis has a Mac Book Pro, not really my cup of tea.
More into Linux myself - its beautiful ... when its set up properly apart from office software.

Have had ipod shuffle, pretty poor, got ipod but its also not my cup of tea - takes too long to put files on it, sound not as good as with a Creative Zen I once had.

I was won over to the iPod when my CD player broke and when we went the shops to get a new one - it was like 'what is this CD player, you speak of?'. Have an iPod instead. So I did and now I just play my music (downloaded from iTunes of course) through the Bose docking station. I love it!

First see if Orange can do you a deal

Secondly, many handsets come with 2 yr warranties so she can get hers fixed

Thirdly, unlocked is always a good thing - if in 6 months she wants to go from Orange to Three or Vodafone or some network in Europe or Abu Dhabi etc, no problems, just swap the SIM card. Orange would likely offer a locked handset FWIW, but may subsidise it if the contract is extended

Get your daughter the samsung she wants, she has seen your iphone and decided against one, the iphone 5 will not be hugely different to the 4.
Make sure you get an unlocked one otherwise she will be paying for 2 contracts for the next 8 months.
I bet that Orange will let her change phones, they will love tying her into another 24 month contract, and you could pay that instead, essentially you would get the phone for cheaper (free) and be paying for her calls probably for the same as you would pay to buy the phone off amazon.

OK my reality check on this , get your lovely daughter what she wants, but do not rush into it, because possibly IF the iphone 5 comes out then she may like it more, but more importantly is when it does/if come out next week then there "may" be some discounting on her choice, since everyone wants an iPhone 5 (or the "new" iphone remember the iPad 3 oops new iPad) a few more weeks may be the difference in price...just a suggestion really.

Edited- of course don't delay too long because something new will come up and then the choice may become more difficult.

A lot of the un-locked phones on Amazon are imported from Belgium as it is illegal to sell a phone locked to a network there (as it is in 12 other EU countries).
Paddyrg is correct about some phone warranties being 2 years. Would be worth checking. If it is, they will fix it for free and then it becomes sellable when she gets her new Galaxy III.
I guess she already has an Android phone, in which case she may (and I do mean may) be able to transfer her apps across by simply logging-in to her google account (only works if her current phone is linked to a 'Google Play' account instead of the old 'Google Marketplace').

Was looking at a Galaxy III as part of my upgrade yesterday. Decided to go for HTC One instead due to price. Now regretting this, as it is the One S, not the One X. Still, have obtained an unlock code to free-it from it's network so I can sell it on.

As Apple's entire O/S family is based on 'Linux', they might be in big trouble if Linus Torvolds can be persuaded to stop them using it in retaliation for their anti-Android stance.

Apple's OS is not based on Linux, it's based on FreeBSD which itself was a spin off of AT&T Unix. Free BSD is a UNIX compliant OS. FreeBSD got bogged down in a lawsuit between Unix Systems Labs and Berkly Software Design (BSD) over the use of certain code and Unix utilities that had been re-written. BSD won.

BSD actually predates Linux but it's release was delayed by the lawsuit. Linus Torvalds has gone on record saying that if BSD and FreeBSD had been available he wouldn't have created Linux. As is often the way with these things shortly after he released Linux on to the world the court case ended and FreeBSD was also released.

Thank you for all your advice. My daughter now has her phone and is very, very happy. And subsequently, so am I. As they say 'it is better to give, than receive'.
