Tax Credit Change in circumstances

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody knew how long it takes (roughly) for a change in circumstances to be processed by Tax Credits. I phoned the helpline three weeks ago to tell them I was no longer working, but our award has not changed. I know I am being impatient, but we are finding things tough.

Many thanks

Well if it helps , I called the tax credit helpline on Tuesday 28th August to report a change in my hours at work As I had just returned after my maternity leave and needed to tell them that I had increased my hours.

On Saturday 1st September -dated for Monday 3rd- I had an unexpected payment into my account and then yesterday , Wednesday 5th September I received my new award notice so all sorted within 8 days for me.

Are you the only person working, were you getting WTC?

If so, you could be still in the 4 week run on period of WTC so the change won't have been processed yet.

Thank you both for your replies, my husband is still working, and I don't know if it makes any difference but we have always received our tax credits on a weekly basis.

Could it be that they are changing your wtc payments to monthly? My Mum and Dad get theres weekly but I have only just started claiming WTC because I have just gone back to my job after maternity leave and my child tax credit is being paid weekly as normal but my working tax credit is being paid every 4 weeks.

Maybe they have changed you to monthly payments?

I phoned this morning to check if they needed sight of my p45, they advised me that everything had been updated but they were going to not increase my award at this stage in case I found another job, I explained that I was returning to full time education at the end of the month, so apparently the award will now be increased and I should have word within the next week. Am I the only one concerned by the policy of not increasing the award in case the claimant gets another job?

The reason they were planning not to increase this years award was incase you got a new job after the increase which would then have seen you have an overpayment once your renewal was done next April.

What they probably would have done is held the increased amount as a "potential" payment and then once you renewed after April 2013 and money owed to you would have been released then once they had confirmation that you earned only what you had stated.

It was the same for us when my Husband lost his job a few years back.
The loopy one has gone :j
