If you now have the owners details, why dont you just contact them & see if they will take an offer to buy, rather than try to 'claim' the property in a way that could potentially get you in to trouble with the law.
My guess is the OP would prefer just move in and live free for a while, and then claim ownership eventually....

I went down to the house today and there were some workmen on the property. So as the owner clearly cares about the house somewhat, abandoning this idea. I might look in to another house, though. Thanks for the advice all. I'm very interested in seeing how this new anti-squatting law works in practice.

Is the difference whether there is an owner at the end of the day?

Simmed moves into decrepit old house and starts making it nice, owner notices but thinks i like labour.. a few years later owner calls the police on the squatter.

Simmed moves into decrepit old house and starts making it nice, no owner/no one cares. 12 years later simmed applies for adverse possesion

Simmed, you could make a for sale sign with your mobile on it (or a burn mobile) and see if that makes the owner notice. Of course it doesnt help your case in court at all but then after 6 months you take the notice down and move in. Helps the pretence with the neighbours
