Recommend a family car - Large boot

Hi,

I am looking for a family car with a large boot, but don't really like/need an estate/mpv.

I was going down the Mondeo 2.0 ghia/titanium tdci as it has a large boot and diesel.

But reading more and more do i need a diesel? I am going to do 10k a year (work) but we have a young family so will be using the car for UK holidays, days out which could be hundreds of miles away. (hopefully at least 2 a month if we can)

I could get a 1.8 mondeo petrol, but not sure on the MPG on that.

I would also like the extras the ghia offer.

Cars up to 6/7 years old and around £3.5k to spend

Any recommendations would very helpful as my head is spinning lol

  • I had a 55 plate Ghia x TDCI Saloon (father in law still has it) and loved it.

    Get one.

My Brother ran Mondeo for quite a few years as Taxis, then he got a Skoda Octavia Laurent & Klemens, it's got everything and he much prefers it to the Mondeo's..........massive boot too.

Ran an 03 reg mk3 1.8 petrol from new for nearly 9 years until a few months ago.

When my commute round trip was 20 miles (30/40/60 limits country roads) I was getting 35mpg average. Changed jobs and commute now 56 miles round trip with the bulk of it 40/60 limits with 9 miles of motorway as well and was getting 39mpg average. And I didn't hang about!

Now running an 11 plate Titanium X diesel 163BHP and getting 51mpg average since I got it.

Im on my 3rd. 2 Petrol ones and now a diesel.

Usually i spend around £2000 on a 5 year old car, Over 100k miles..

My diesel was £2300 5 years but higher mileage than i normally buy them at. nearly 150k.
That was nearly 3 years ago. Basic servicing, Tyres and brakes.

Just dont spend all your budget on a car, No matter what you choose. Any car can breakdown.

I can get 50+mpg on a run. Not bag for a large 1.5ton car.

And i got 39mpg towing the caravan. Gobsmacked with that. I thought the trip
computer was lying. Thought low to mid 30's at best.
But no i worked it out properly and it was correct.

A remap for extra power works wonders for economy also.

Positive's = Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, Plenty of choice, Did i mention CHEAP?

Negatives. = Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. :) Good to buy but remember that when selling. Its not rare so prices are low. But you paid little for it anyway.

If i got £800 for it now. Thats fairly cheap motoring. But i may keep this for another couple of years yet.

But i have my eye on an S-Max. They are not cheap. Bigger issue. No spare wheel and
    nowhere to store one.

We have both - a Skoda Octavia and a Mondeo, and I always thought that the Mondy could carry a lot, but the Octavia is in another league, it is like a tardis. It also has a better ride quality IMO.

Only comes as a saloon at that price point.

    large boot but lousy access.

Octavia hatch in the 1.9 for long term reliability/economy(check the cam belts been done)

or find a bit more money and get this, got the toys, only 4 years old..

My Brother's Skoda has done over 220,000 miles now and still looks fresh inside and out (it's a 56 plate).........he had serious issues with the Mondeo's regarding reliability (Taxi driver, so needs an extremely reliable car).

The Company he works for has now decided not to buy any more Mondeo's as the new shape is even less reliable :(

I'm not mechanical but it has something to do with Oil Pumps and DPF ??......oh and the Clutch!!
