My good deed

Well what a fantastic day ive had today :)

On my way to work this morning I rescued a Tawny Owl :)

Daft thing had flown into or had been clipped by another vehicle and was sitting in the path of cars and hgvs on a very busy road. I thought it was a pile of rags to begin with, it was only when I drove past it I realsied what it was so quickly turned my van around and pulled up along side it to prevent it from getting run over.

Luckily I had a pet carrier in the back of my van as my mrs fosters guinea pigs and rabbits for the RSPCA, so I got the carrier out - put some gloves on and hearded it into the carrier. I had a quick look at it, and it was a bit feisty so didnt think it was badly injured.

Eventually got it to a specialist vets, and they took it in.
They phoned me this afternoon to say it hadnt broken any bones so that was really good news, they said he was still a bit stunned so they were keeping him quiet and were going to keep him in over night with give him a bit of food and water and hopefully will be re releasing it tomorrow.

It was so nice to see a wild animal that close up and I'd like to think it knew I was helping it, who knows a few seconds more sat where it was and it could have been squished :(

Vet are going to ring me back again tomorrow to let me know how its gone overnight and whether it can be released tomorrow.

Well done you for stopping and helping it!! Good job you had the carrier in the back too - how lucky was that.

Aww, that's lovely - well done you for stopping! Do you think the vets might let you come along when they release it? Would be great to see it flying off and knowing it was partly down to you being bothered to stop :)

Great news this morning - the owl was successfully released back into the wild last night :T

One of the vets from the vetenary practice I took it too has a farm with barns and a woodland, by yesterday evening it had come to its sences a bit more and was wanting to fly, so after consulting with an owl rescue centre somewhere in Rochdale she took it home last night.

She placed it into one of the barns where she stayed for two hours watching it, after a few fumbled attempts to fly it eventually got airbourne and off it went :)

So all's well that ends well, its really made my week knowing ive helped that owl back into the wild where it belongs, and I even admit to shedding a tear when the vet phoned me this morning to say it had flown back into the wild.

I did take a photo ! poor thing was well dazed when I took it, you can just see its right eye is closed...thats where it got clobbered !
