We've just bought a small granddaughter clock at auction.
It desperately needs some TLC (mainly the movement & face). My husband thinks it's oak but I'm having grave doubts over that and think it might be veneer. We planned to clean up the case but without using any strong paint removers. It looks like it's been stained at some point then given a coat of varnish. I've noticed very small area when the varnish has slightly blistered. If the worst comes to the worst we can always paint it but that's really the last resort. It's such a dear little clock but certainly no priceless antique. It was made about 1914/18. We're having the movement cleaned & repaired so currently we've just got the case which is in pretty good condition. Was looking at using good quality wood reviver but now unsure if that's the best product to use. Can anyone offer any adivce? many thanks in advance.

Decided to take the plunge & used Colron Furniture Stripper on clock case & it's worked a treat:j. My fears about veneer were unfounded and it's oak. Had intended staining wood but the grain is lovely:) & we have now decided against staining. Just debating over wax or varnish finish but think we favour wax. It's such a lovely little clock and so pleased to give it a new lease of life.
