What are peoples views on holding a garage sale? E.g. like a car boot sale but on a front garden / drive. Just out of curiosity!

I'd love to do one, but we get very little "passing trade" on our street so would be a little pointless.
I also don't know if you are allowed, whether you'd need public liability insurance, etc.0 -

That is the same where I live as live in a cul de sac. I suppose posters on the main roads around the area and advertising on facebook e.g. those selling groups might get people to come have a look. But then are posters allowed to just be put up? Someone suing for if they fell over on your drive would be stupid but I could be something that could happen.0 -
Practical info here - http://www.londonyardsale.co.uk/how-to/
As regards publicity you could do a "community" or village sale.0 -
As mentioned the laws here usually put a stop to it. The culture is quite different between here and there too. There are very few sales there that resemble car boot sales.
That said if you live in an area with a community it could work..0 -

True, there aren't, but there are several ways you can be stopped if a neighbour makes a complaint. Each council would be different and some may have bye-laws prohibiting it. I can think of some streets near me that would be horrified if anyone tried it and they'd be on the phone right away.JimmyTheWig wrote: »Though the website linked to in the previous post suggests there are no laws against it....0 -
I wish we did have these, but I think on a practical level it's just harder to do them here. All the photos I have seen of US garage sales on blogs show them taking place outside houses with large front yards. The roads and the pavements are also always much wider than over here. There's a lot more room for people to park and mill about without causing a problem (and I have seen photos of garage sales where loads of people have turned up). I can't think of any roads in my area which would be big enough for garage sales.0

We used to have jumble sales outside houses back in the day. Even Blue Peter used to get people to organise them.
Then car boot sales took over and the world started to slowly die;).0 -
I saw on Gumtree last week an advert with a photo and a sample list ... people were moving house and told people to come and take the stuff for free in their driveway and that whatever was left by the Saturday afternoon would be going to the tip.
I've been to a couple of garage sales .... just by spotting a sign on a lamppost .... they've never got a lot though. Usually mostly kids' stuff.0
