I've never pre-warned any of my card providers about any foreign trips, and have never had any problems using my cards abroad.

In fact, last time I was in China, I was the only member of my party who had a working card to pay the hotel bill :rotfl:

Yup, I know. The previous times I didn't pre-warn, and both my credit card (Barclaycard) and debit card (Halifax) were fine. That's why I didn't call.

I'd changed credit card and got caught out, silly me. But also Halifax declined. I'd recommend to give them a quick call just to make sure :)

I've used Visa cards in the USA loads of times, never had a security check.

Warning your card issuer doesn't mean the card won't be blocked, it just means that they know it could be you using the card if they can't get hold of you.

its not a case of ignored....

Just because you tell your card provider that you are going to xx, does not mean that you will not get a security check.
What it will mean is that they will try to contact you by the most suitable method...
Ie. Not try to call you at home 1st, when it says you are in xx.

Most fraud systems work on known fraud patterns, not on your spending.
So if you happen to hit usa, when there is a lot of fraud happening. Then you will get a check.
Also better to take a credit & debit card. As fraud can be totally diffrent on each.

Also load your phone up with the international numbers for your card providers. So you have a quick and easy reference to call them should anything happen.

Incidentally I'd recommend the Post Office card to use abroad. Good exchange rate, no transaction surcharge, interest free currency withdrawals from PO's if paid in full by the due date and free purchase protection insurance.

I've personally never advised any credit card company and have travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, South, Central and North America without problems.

    A little dated but......http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/cards/2009/07/going-on-holiday-ensure-your-cards-

Another vote for Post Office Credit Card here :)

  • Yep... I use PO. Intro offer of 3 months' interest free on purchases (which includes foreign stuff).

    Website is confusing.

When travelling bear in mind that CCs get blocked quite easily (regardless of whether you have told them before hand). So take backups.

Plus 1 here. And if you go through quidco to arrange any foreign currency you can get cashback.

I've never advised them when travelling but have only used it in Europe
