FPN received - Wrong speed limit!

So I received an NTO for an FPN through the post a week or two ago, stating that I had been clocked driving at 36mph in a 30mph zone. I drove back out to the stretch of road where I remember the mobile camera van being parked and it is clearly signed as being a 40mph limit. Only problem is I'm not sure how long those speed limit signs have been there, they've definitely been recently added. They're not there if you look at the area on Google Streetview. I've been offered a speed awareness course as an alternative to an FPN but I'm tempted to appeal it if possible on the grounds that doing 36mph in a 40 zone is not an offence. What I don't want to happen is to turn up at court only for them to say "well those signs weren't there when you were caught".
Any advice / suggestions on how to proceed are welcome.
Thanks

Suggest you take this over to pepipoo and fill in the nip wizard over there, they will probably be able to offer the best advice0

Get a copy of the traffic regulation order from the highways authority and it will tell you when the limit changed.0

Follow Sgt Pepper's advice - you need to know what speed limit was in actually force at the time of the alleged offence before seeking any further advice."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

My guess is that a 40mph stretch was recently changed to 30mph and that is the reason the camera van was there. Many regular travellers on that road will be in the habit of driving at 40mph, like you they will all be caught out.0

Thanks guys. The folks over on Pepipoo had the same advice regarding the Traffic Order. Waiting for a call back from the council now.
