Does anyone know how to clean up an artist's painting please ?

Hi all,
I bought a painting in a local charity shop yesterday for £2.
It is a genuine painting on canvas and the artist's name is Tony Richards and, if you do a google search with 'Tony Richards artist', you will see that he does charge a lot of money for his paintings so I think that I have got a bargain.:j
I'm not an expert but IMHO it is a really good painting.
Anyway the only problem is that it does need a slight clean up so I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on how to clean paintings as I am not an expert.
Also I have another painting (again bought in a charity shop) that has the signature 'MARTEN' on it and please note that it is in uppercase. However, I can't find anything with regards this artist on google so can anyone please help with this.
Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

Don't try to clean it youself, unless you want to ruin it.
Get the picture valued, then determine if it's worth the cost of getting it professionally cleaned/restored."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

Never try and clean a painting yourself - different pigments and materials need different treatments.
You could reduce the value hugely - most dealers, auction houses and collectors prefer paintings 'untouched'.
There are a few 'Marten's' listed in the Art Sales Index I have; can you give us a few more details about the painting?"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -

Okay I'll try. Painting is approx 27inches by 22inches of a country landscape with a thatched cottage. There are no figures in it; namely people or animals. As I said before, it is signed in the bottom left hand corner in white letters with the word 'MARTEN' in white coloured uppercase letters.
IMHO it is not as good as the other painting that I referenced in my OP but I am not an expert.
Any help would be much appreciated.:)Have a beer! :beer:0
