my phone extensions are not working??

Hi everyone
Hope someone can help? we are with b.t our phone line downstairs is ok, but all the extensions in the bedrooms are not and never have worked.
Hubby has taken the cover off the front of the sockets but there's masses of wires as you can imagine!
Do we need B.T to come and do something, we did phone them but they want £98.00 call out and £48.00 per hour after that :eek:
