New Kitten

My sister volunteers at PDSA, today she persuaded me for us to adopt a rescue kitten from there (they'd be taking him to a shelter otherwise). He's 8 weeks old. Have got all the basics I need for him, will be booking him in the vets first thing tomorrow.
We let him out of the carrier and the first thing he did was hide behind tv. He's now in the kitchen, has eaten some food and seems fine.

Whats the best way to settle him in, just leave him to explore on his own or sit with him?

Also whats the best way to introduce him to the dog and the dog to him??

Thanks in advance
Sara

It's generally recommended to confine a new cat to one quiet room containing their food, water and litter tray for the first few days. This is aimed at helping them feel secure, if they hide that is fine just sit on the floor and talk to them, let them come to you in their own time. Slowly introduce to the rest of the house one room at a time. For the dog do scent swapping once the cat has settled, then introduce from a distance perhaps whilst they are eating.

It is worth running a search, this has been gone over many times with some excellent links to websites.

  • What a little sweetheart! I know very little about kittens (or anything else for that matter ;)) but I just had to coo. And to thank you for rescuing a kitty and welcome you over to the furry side :D

Thank you all, have plenty of reading to do lol

Should I be worried about wires at all? i.e will he chew them?

You can buy a cable sheath from the likes of B&Q for a few quid, what I did was to gather the wires behind the TV into a big bunch & tie them together.

Some kittens are incredibly 'chewy', especially when they teethe. One free solution is to bundle the wires loosely together and cover them in kitchen-roll or loo roll tubes that have been slit up one side, then use masking tape to tape the loose wires to the skirting board and furniture. Then give them a toy that is just as chewy and fun to play with (large elastic hair bobbles are good if you use them!)

For any windows, here's a simple & cheap solution...You just need some lengths of thin chain & some 1/2 in self tapping screws.

  • Well we've had Sidney for a week now and he has settled in well. Very playful, very wild, very energetic. His favourite toy seems to be a fake mouse which he likes to "kill" and carry everywhere lol

He's had a little diarrhea (not the wet stuff, just not solid sorry tmi) but I think that's because I changed his food.

His first injection was today, he's eaten a little food but been quite sleepy since, 3 weeks until his next one and he's getting microchipped same time.

Introducing the dog has been hit or miss, first few days the dog would just get wound up and the kitten would hiss and growl, now as long as Sid is still the dog is fine its when he runs she wants to give chase. They have cwtched up together a few times so I am hopeful lol

Above photo its actually hard to tell where dog begins and kitten ends, would have added my b/w bunny if he would keep still :rotfl:
