I have twice been offered either morning or afternoon appointments by National Grid and was offered an evening appointment when I was getting a new meter installed. I may have just been lucky but you may want to ask about this.
I'd be more irritated about the rigid practice of the gas company than the daily signing. Have you been claiming your expenses for attending each day? You can claim fares for any appointment on a day other than your usual fortnightly signing day. Don't forget your bus tickets or you can claim 25p per mile if you drive.
