elderly parents quote for refit bathroom, how much?

my elderly parents need their bathroom refitted with shower loo sink and complete retile. their happy to have the tiles over old because of plaster board walls. they has a guy lined up for £2500. but he was in an accident and bailed. i have got another quote, but for £4600.00! the room is 16.5 meters for the tiles. my dad is exasperated to due men coming out and failing to quote or ring back when he asks for quotes. he now just wants to right off the £400. deposit and take back the tiles. i have no idea what a resonable quote should be,so if i try to get someone else what i should say is a fair quote. any ideas?

  • the average price for a tiler is £25 m/2 plus adhesive & grout which could be done over the existing providing they are sound, as for the replacement suite it will depend if it is like for like with a min amount of plumbing involved i presume the quotes are materials & labour so it really depends the kind of tiles, suite they want.

  • they have bought all the fittings, so its a quote for the work of doing the fitting. just been on checkatrade and there is a review for the plumber who bailed, praising how with all his work he still did a call out:mad:

We have just had a new bathroom created from scratch....its been moved from downstairs to up into the old third bedroom box room,so we've needed everything doing...it come in at £4000
The room was approx 2mx 4m.
Gone for basic white suite with shower over bath and bath screen fully tiled walls with moasic boarder and a white lino on the floor.
Bear in mind we had to have all new pipework and water connected which I assume you wouldnt need and we had to have the room plaster skimmed too
Previously we have had quotes to fit bathrooms at around £1500 labour charge and thats to fit whatever we have subsequently chosen and purchased ie we but the materials, they fit...

  • if it's straight forward which it sounds like it is then it's a week to 10 days work tops, a good plumber/bathroom fitter can change a suite in a day 2 days at the most providing there are no probs & the rest of the time doing the tiling fitting trims etc, so £2.5k is a good price for a fitter so i'm not sure why he didn't want to do it, if that is the case.

  • Often some less moral tradesmen will fob off a job or provide a very high quote in the hope they don't have to do the job. Armed with this knowledge... it can take more than the standard 3 quotes to actually get someone to complete the work.
