Understanding New Car Registrations

Could somebody please be kind enough to explain how the new car registrations are worked out. My car is an 04, and I get that. But I am now completely confused. :o

Sorry if this has been asked before ! I'm sure it must have been, or am I the only slow one on here !

    04 = early 2004
    54 = Late 2004

    For this year
    12 = Early 2012
    62 = Late 2012

    First two letters of the plate refer to where in the country the car was registered e.g GU is Guildford.

    Last three letters are random.
