Best Places to Look for a Job!

Hi

I've just been made redundant after 6 years so its been a while since I searched for a job.

The only website I know is direct.gov (and the jobs on offer on that site seem very limited) so I was wondering if anyone could recommend me any good places / websites to go on to search for a job.

I'm happy to do part time or full time, temporary or permanant...I just need something and I need some advice please on where to look...

I feel like I'm getting nowhere atm. Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks, Richard

Hi Richard, Not sure what sort of job you are looking for but I always google the companies that I would like to work for and check their recruitment section, most websites have them on and if they don't pop them an email over with your CV attached.

There are a few other sites, try your local paper website, Gumtree, monster, jobsite, tons more.. just google job vacancies and take a look

    Hope you find one soon

Hi Richard - if you know exactly what you want and you are confident that you have the skills and experience to get a job in your chosen field it may be useful to register with specialist job agencies in addition to searching on line.
If you don't feel fully confident ask your Jobcentre adviser for support - it can be quite devastating when you suddenly find yourself unemployed. Good luck - hope you get fixed up soon.

Just to add a cautionary note regarding Gumtree. Be particularly careful when looking there. Be wary on other sites too where the organisation advertising doesn't have a clear geographical location.

The best place to look for a job is your network - friends, family, neighbours and previous colleagues.

Don't be shy about contacting anyone and everyone to see if they know of something suitable.
  • Hi, i've never found the direct gov website very good.

Register with things like your local council and local authority vacancy mailshot - many will have a pdf type thing they email out weekly, you can usually also search on their website - jobs don't always make it onto both so have a google.

NHS jobs - google this and they have their own page, updated regularly, so worth checking - it's not just medical jobs advertised on here.

Voluntary sector - often have their own recruitment sites, so for example check out each charity e.g., The Children's Society, Action for Children, Barnardos, etc

Keep checking the websites of any local universities/colleges - they're not just recruiting for academic staff.

Make sure you purchase the local paper which often has a job section on a particular day - or check out their website which usually shows job vacancies too - though many employers limit their advertising to papers due to the costs.

Also sign up for things like Guardian Jobs - google it, and then sign up by choosing your location and types of role you're interested in

What field are you hoping to work in?

Ive found direct.gov to be hit and miss depending on where you live, what job your looking for and the time your looking for a job.

If your happy to do part time or full time, temporary or permanant then why not try agencies.
  • There's only a few sites worth looking at:

Indeed has every job vacancy on it, Charity Job, nhs jobs, local council and reed.
  • What field are you hoping to work in?

Thank you Rachel & everyone else who has repplied to my thread :). Ideally I'd like to work with animals, I haven't got much experience in this field though so I'm thinking of doing voluntary work in animal care (whilst also working in any other job I can find!)
