Student account - can I change it?

I opened a student account with Barclays the other week, is it possible to close this and open an account somewhere else?

Thanks!

  • Just open another one with another bank.

DS opened with Co-op six months after Lloyds & now has two student accounts. Was never asked if he had another account nor to close the former.

Lloyds & some others not a lot of use if you have a year studying abroad as part of your degree, what with their rip off debit card fees for use abroad.

Yes, but I thought you were only allowed one? Is it possible to cancel it or am I stuck into it? I don't want to break any dodgy rules or anything haha. Thanks.

  • Just to let you know I've changed the account over. Barclays customer service was terrible, seemed as if I'd asked them to dry clean the carpet before I'd walk on it!

Went into HSBC (whom I banked with anyway) and they were only too happy to help!

  • Most banks say in their terms and conditions you can only hold a student account with them as long as you don't have another student account with someone else, but it's not like there's a law against it.

When you go to open your student account at another bank it might raise an eyebrow if they see you have a limited credit record (as most students do) but have a big overdraft available with Barclays (with your student account). If you go in and indicate you want to actually switch your existing student account from Barclays as opposed to just opening a new account then you may be more likely to be accepted as they'll expect a big available overdraft to be on your report.

Just out of interest, why have you decided to move away so quickly, and who are you moving to?
