Hi,
I've been looking for a my first car for a few months now for when I turn 17 (next June).
My preference is a classic car, maybe a hatchback or SUV but I'm not sure about cars which are cheap to buy but are reliable and also cheap to insure...
Cars I have in mind: Original mini or original mini clubman, Peugeot 205, Peugeot 104, Renault 5, Renault Clio mk1, VW Golf or Polo mk1/mk2, Lada Niva, Panda 4x4 (Original)
I hope you can help,
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael. my son turned 17 yesterday and has been driving around in his classic Mini. Bought for £475, needed some welding and bodywork which he did with his Dad. We drove it on a classic policy with Adrian Flux for £99 per year, with an agreed valuation of £2000. We have had to change that to put Sam on it and are now paying around £450 with him as a named driver.Debt-free...and staying that way...0

Have you had a look how much any of them cars would be to insure ?
Cars that are genuinely cheap or cheaper to insure are those that you dont see modded up eg golfs, a 205, boy racer cars, so cars like volvos, maybe skodas, dihatsu(sp?)0 -

That sounds excellent! I've always wanted a classic mini and I think I'll do the same as you did because I want to restore it with my Dad too but they're quite difficult to find for less than 1000pounds, do you have any suggestions for where I could look? Also where did you buy yours from?
Many thanks,
Michael0 -
Yes that's understandable DCFC79, the last thing I want to do is be classed as a boy racer haha!0

Many classic insurers won't take under 21s. I didn't know Adrian Flux did - good news.
In my experience on ordinary policies an old very unfashionable large car is cheapest. It would be half the price for my daughter to drive our Volvo 240 estate with a 2.3 litre engine, than a 1.4 Peugeot 306, but she doesn't like driving it.

Thanks for your help, would the classic Panda 4x4, the Lada Niva or the Daihatsu Rocky be cheap to insure for me then?

Probably not. Your looking now for next year,
Who knows what the prices are going to be like.
2 years ago i was paying £300 now its almost £500. No claims accidents etc etc etc..
Lada Niva? Try finding one. Only 1 on ebay at the moment. And its probably over your budget.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
