Most of us have done it at some point, got involved in a bidding war and paid more than we wanted to for an item
I now put in a max bid at the end to avoid this.
I have been looking at a particular item and there are a few on auction at the moment. I checked the completed listings to get an idea of selling price and started watching. There is one bidder on there who is getting desperate, they are not waiting until late in the auction they are bidding every time a new bid goes in, which pushes the price up. They started bidding on one and got pipped at the post, so went straight on to the next one and got beat in the last few seconds and again on the third. The next one was local to me so I could afford to bid a few pounds extra and collect and I actually felt a bit guilty when I won it at the last minute.
The bidder is now on to the next one and the price is shooting up honestly I am rooting for him/her so fingers crossed everyone I don't think they could bear to lose again. _pale_

Best to place the bid in the last minute. I would not get involved in bidding wars - as you say - you just end up paying more :-)0

I sell a line of goods that often gets broken in transit to me . I list those as broken/damaged and start at a minuscule price and often achieve more for a broken one than I do for a perfect one on a BIN listing.

Yay he won one, eventually, although I suspect we all may have paid extra due to his continuous bidding.
