Whats the best plants to use for framing the lawn?

I have a flower bed running down each side of the lawn against the fence and have planted some flowers along there however since I got my hydrangea I've realised I need plants of that size rather than the little bedding plants that you can't see.

Can anyone recommend big shrubs, flowers or plants that will grow to a medium or big size. I have a red robin plant thats really becoming established too so something similar to these. I like the grasses too but mine seems really small and thin.

Also my garden seems really dull and my hydrangea flowers haven't grown yet. Can you recommend some plants that will inject some colour too. Is it possible to grow bird of paradise over here?

Thanks

    This is a huge question!
I would start by looking at some puctures of plants you like and seeing how suitable they are for your soil and orientation.

I find crocus.co.uk a great tool for researching plants. You can search by colour, season of interest ( as important as height etc) as well as shade and few other things

I've got a skimmia. Lovely variegated leaves and red berries.

  • Have a look at:

    evergreen shrubs
    Choisya Sundance (Mexican Orange Blossom)
    Viburnum Tinus
Euonymus - there are several types.
    Escallonia - various types
    Hebe - the large-flowered varieties

    Deciduous:
Weigela - I've a Florida which is variegated with pink flowers.

Perennials (come up every year, die down at end of season)
    Hemerocallis (Day Lillies)
Sedum Spectabile (green or red leaves)
    Rudbeckia (large orange flowers)
    fuchsias

You could also plant up large pots with summer annuals and place them in your borders for the summer months to add colour and some height. Also a couple of hanging baskets or wall pots/baskets on your fences at the back of the borders.
