TalkTalk want a cancellation fee

So, I've just moved in with my partner, whose mum (homeowner and contract holder) recently passed away.
I'm in the process of switching phone lines and broadband to o2, as TalkTalk have not been great - random calls twice a day, poor customer service, etc. And o2 have a better offer.
But all of a sudden, Talk Talk want a whopping £144 from her mother due to a cancellation fee.
Who/does this have to be paid? Her mother is no longer with us, the house has new tenants (me and my partner).

It all hinges on what was agreed. As she is deceased, they can make any claim they feel is reasobable and support it with a bill to the Executor. S/he will then disburse any payments due to suppliers assuming there are funds available.
If they (Executor) only pays for the services received up to termination, that is their business. It most certainly is not the concern of the new renter, who will take out a new contract.0 -
Ignore TT and place a order with o2 on the line in your name, then ignore TT bills, when debt collection send a letter send it back to them with a copy of the death certificate, that shut TT up - communicating with TT seems to be a waste most of the time.SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe0

The mother's contract died with her and the contract is void, any debts up to the date of her death due are the responsibility of the estate.
Therefore there is no cancellation fee applicable. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks
My partner called up yesterday and they did say that due circumstances, they wont need a cancellation fee.
Lets just hope the final bill won't include it!0 -
This appears to be a common poor training issue -not just with TalkTalk.
Sky put all issues involving death of account holder through to their accessability dept who are all trained to deal with these situations (hardly uncommon) but Virgin like TalkTalk seem to deal with it through normal CS. A friend lost his partner and called to change the name on the account and Virgin wanted £20 for a name change -they later apologised but it took several weeks for them to process the change and during that time they were trying to DPA the account asking for the (deceased ) account holder !!
