Cant afford to live!

Hi
Recently moved into our own place last month. Boyfriend starts his job as a teacher this week. He has been a student for the last year so had no income.
I have been working as many hours as I can, but unfortunately with the climit, my contract is only 6 hours AWEEK.
I have been working roughly 15 hours a week, but am struggling to afford anything.
Boyfriend wont get paid until end of october and i am having a transfer closer to new house and for the next few weeks they can only give me 6hours a week.

in such a pickle. boyfriend is using his last savings to pay for rent this month, as i cant afford it. i used all my savings up in the last year :(:(:(

i have tried avon, but this actualyl ending up costing me money. I am applying for other jobs, but again - getting nowhere.

we have no credit cards but i have just applied for one as im sacred we wont be able to afford to eat :(

  • Do you have anything you can sell - Ebay type of thing? That's the only way I can think of to get money quickly. I earn bits and pieces writing, but its a slow process and you might not be able to make much very quickly, especially as payment is into Paypal, and you need to build up at least £50 to be able to withdraw it without paying fees.

Umm....if you have lots to sell you could try a carboot?

The quickest instant cash route. Just remember to take sandwiches and a flask for the day.

  • Thanks for the quick reply.
We have been selling things on ebay when it was free listing, but i forgot about the charges when you sell. So some things have been 'given away free' once you take that into account.

All car boots are finished with around here now I think. We have tried doing one this summer, but they were cancelled last minute due to the fields flooding. Typical!

Feel abit rubbish. I know things will get better in afew months once he starts getting his wages and pays back his overdraft, but until then we literally have nothing.

Word of warning about car boots: They might seem a great idea for getting instant cash but people generally want everything for nothing. I came back from one with most of my stuff left. Mam sold her stuff well but it was old 70s annuals and old vinyl singles. I had a box full of DVDs, good quality and people turned their noses up at £2/dvd. They literally couldn't have got them cheaper elsewhere because even if you buy off amazon, for example, and pay 1p you still have £2.80 postage.

Another woman wanted to buy a bag full of lovely stuffed toys for 50p.

You can understand it in the current climate but it doesn't help you much when you need the cash :o

The postage on a DVD from Amazon is £1.25.

£2 is a lot for a DVD at a car boot, my local ones tend to charge around 50p to a maximum of £1 for a DVD. When I do a car boot I rarely bother with DVDs, CDs or books as they go so cheaply it is not worth the effort.

  • If you decided you didn't want it when you put it in the box to car boot... why refuse to drop your prices? Often people will pick up more stuff if they realise you're prices are low... they'll end up spending the same amount. What use is car boot stock back at home... better coins in the tin I say!

  • Thanks for the advice re. car boot pricing.

Most of the items Ill be selling lots of are unused make up, shower gels etc etc
Pricing these at 50p each. Probably going to sell some shoes too, as I wont wear them... maybe price these at £2-£3

never done a car boot before, so hope this is all ok x

Are you sure you can't claim any benefits? Even though your boyfriend has a job coming up, it sounds like your current/recent situation would entitle you. You get some help if you work anything under 16 hours a week. Phone your local CAB office and they'll go through a benefits check with you.

Don't use a credit card for food. Go to your local food bank. You can find the details via Google. There is no shame in using one in today's economic climate.

If he is starting work now ish, he should be paid at the end of September, not October,

    You might be better checking.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
