Used Car Buyer Rights

Options
Hi,

I recently bought a second hand car from a car supermarket. Up until paying for the car there had been a fault with its engine starting, but upon payment and collection I was assured that the car had been serviced and repaired. I was only told that upon service they had discovered it needed its front brakes replacing, which they did.

The car worked fine for a couple of days but then wouldn't start again, so I took it back off to the dealers and awaited its repair.

Collected the car and they told me they had replaced the spark plugs and coil pack. I then noticed that the fans weren't working properly, so have booked it in again for repair. The brakes have started squeaking (is this normal for 'new' brakes??), and it won't start properly again. Consequently, I am taking the car to my own mechanic to have it thoroughly checked over, and to see if they have actually done any of the jobs they say they have. The car is booked in at the dealers later this week.

I didn't take out a lengthy warranty (wish I had now), and I have a 30 day 'warranty' with the dealer. Has anybody got any clues where I stand with regards to returning the vehicle and wanting a refund, or any issues if these 'repairs' go on for longer than the 30 days?

Many thanks.

  • What a shocking tale, and what a load of sharks. You should have had this vehicle checked over before you bought it.

Tell us about the vehicle, age/mileage/model

  • I think you get more than 30 days under the Sale Of Goods Act. Someone will be along to confirm but I think it's 6 months.

I also think you can reject the car under the sale of goods act but you need a good reason which it sounds like you have.

Sounds like you need to talk to trading standards.

Let us know how you get on.
  • It's a little Vauxhall Corsa Sxi, 08 plate, 42k miles. Really peeved that I didn't get it checked out before to be honest.

Will see what my mechanic says tomorrow and what happens to the car once it has been back in for repair. This is their last chance, my old car is sat on their forecourt, almost tempted to tell them I want that and all my money back.
  • any news? (and extra space filling to make it post)

  • Which retailer did you get your car from? I'm thinking of buying from a car supermarket in the next few weeks. There is a lot more choice and prices seem good compared to local garages. I know that private buy is cheaper but I thought car supermarket is more "secure". But after your story - I'm not sure where to go for stress free car buying experience.
  • Well took it to my garage yesterday and he said they have indeed done the work they are claiming to do, but that there is still an outstanding fault on the internal fans. Got to say driving it last night felt nice so I'm hoping things are beginning to work out.

Deridere - I bought it from a local car supermarket native to the Yorkshire area, they are not a national organisation. All I would say is get it thoroughly checked over before you commit to buying it, and insist that the problems are fixed before you hand over your final payment. Do not let them draw you in! If you can afford to take out the 12 month warranty DO IT!

I will be writing a letter of complaint to this company once this has all blown over as I am also having problems with the service desk staff, but that's another story... Fingers crossed this saga is coming to an end!
  • 'Internal Fans' - you mean the heater/blower in the cabin?
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • Yep that's what I mean! :o
