It will come back to you through your payroll, not sure when but it will certainly not be too long. You wont have to wait till next April anyway.

If you earned £900 in July and your only income was JSA of £750 prior to that in this tax year, you should not have been taxed at all if you were on 810L on a non-emergency basis. It would appear, therefore, that you may be on an emergency code and no refund will be forthcoming until this fact changes.

Indeed. OP is there a W1 or M1 after your tax code? If there is (and still is in Aug) then you won't get any refunded you'll pay the same tax in Aug as you did in July.

    Not quite.

If the OP is on a Wk1/Mth1 tax code (which as ceeforcat correctly says is the case) or it says the words Non-cumulative, then July's pay of £900 would be taxed by £44.92 and NI of £32.08 so total £77 - near enough to the OP's statement that it was about £75.

In August the OP says earnings of £550 which would see no tax or NI taken as it's below the threshold for both.

However no refund will be given until the OP gets off that emergency tax code.

As I indicated but perhaps not so well!!! Anyone else want to know why OP has not been paid for August yet - today is September 3rd.

i did have a p45 and handed it to my new employer when i started, so i presume im on the right tax code, i thought 810L was correct?

basically, to put it simply, i estimate that by next april i will not have used all my tax allowance as:
    april - july - 750 jsa
    july pay - 900
    august pay - 550
sept till march at avg of 600 pm = 4,200

    750 +900+550+4,200 = 6,400.

all i was really wanting to know is will i get the tax i paid in july refunded with my august pay or will i have to claim it at the end of the year?

    sorry for any confusion

Neither your tax will be sorted when the tax office issue a cumulative tax code for you, or when your P45 is operated, assuming it is a cumulative P45. As far as the P45 is concerned check the part 1A that you kept, there is a box after the tax code, does this have an X in it. If it did then the code on the P45 was emergency, if not then you need to check with your payroll dept as they do not appear to have operated this P45 as yet.

Regarding your confusion over the 810L tax this is both the normal tax code everyone starts off with and it is also the emergency tax code.

My assumption was that, as their first payment was somewhat higher than they expect future payments to be, that first payment was for more than one pay period, but hopefully the OP will advise on this. OP you might also like to bear in mind that if it was for more than one pay period then there proberbly should not have been any national insurance deducted, was this the case?

hello all, ive spoken to my accounts department today and they said that my tax code etc will be sorted out asap, so that should sort this problem out.
In regards to the person wondering why i havnt been paid for august yet, the company i work for pay in a very odd way! i will get paid on the 18th of september for the work i did in august. its like that every month, bit annoying when i first started as i had to wait 7 weeks for some money but its ok now.

I earned 900 in my first month as there was plenty of work going as quite alot of people were on holiday. im expecting to only earn 600 a month from now on as ive been given a shift pattern of roughly 20-25 hours a week at minimum wage
