Someone drove through our Privet hegde...

Hi guys,

was looking for a little advice if anyone has been through anything similar. On Saturday a car drove through our 7/8 ft high, 2 foot wide privet and we now have a huge fiesta shared hole and our gate has been knocked down and broken, and its concrete pillars knocked down.

One of the reasons we bought the house was its toal privacy as these hedges run the entire boundry. Its only a little 2 bed ex council house in leeds, but we loved the hedges!

We have the insurance details, and im going to call them tonight, we got them from the police after the driver did a runner - but i dont really know what to do, as they cant replace a hedge!

We were considering putting in a drive, so this is probably the time to so it, but what should we expect the insurace to pay for?

I dont really want hedge then fence...but dont want all my lovely hedges replaced with fence!

Oh dear oh dear!

Just basically - any ideas? On what to do to make it look okay, and what to aim for the insurance company to do?

Thanks everyone :)

You can get "mature" specimens to fill the hole.

The insurer should do the lot to get it back to your satisfaction

They'll not go for betterment, but they'll probably replant with the expectation that it will grow in, meanwhile to paying for this you should get a small amount as compensation whilst you await the growing season!
  • Thanks for the responses, I shall keep this updated with how things go. To trouble you some more, how much do you think I should expect/push for in compo? May try and strike a deal just for cash so we can put a drive in? Not a lot of experiance in this, we bought this as our first home just over a year ago and are gutted!

    Thanks again
  • You will not get "compensation" but will be indemnified - ie they will give you sufficient money to put you back into the same financial situation as you were immediately prior to the accident.

If you say they have damaged the hedge, a pillar and a gate then the TP insurer would pay for those three items to be repaired/ replaced as appropriate.

They may appoint their preferred supplier to deal with it all for you or may simply give you a cash settlement. If it is the later then it is up to you if you use that money to put right the damage as it was before or decide to use it towards a driveway or such.
  • Claim all registered tonight by a very nice lady, expecting a call from the claims assessing team tomorrow. I am hoping they come see what's been done so they can understand how it affects the privacy and security of the perimeter of the house. Cheers for the responses, ill keep updating so if anyone else is ever in a similar position.
