fuel deposit/debit card

May I apologise if this is in the wrong thread but I wasn't sure where to put it.
On Monday 20yh august my car broke down and through the breakdown company was able to hire a car ( I only did this as my brother was returning from Cyprus and needed to be picked up from his RAF station) I had to give my debit card for a fuel deposit (in case I didn't fill up on returning the vehicle) The deposit was £50, now this was taken out of my account the same day and it showed briefly on my on-line statement, the car was returned on the Tuesday, filled up and with no damage the hire car company has said that it has re-credited my debit card with the £50 but it still has not shown up (as of sept 3rd), now i realise there was a bank holiday in between, but surely it should have re-appeared by now. I have been in touch with the bank who says they cant see anything pending and the hire company says it has sent the money back, yet I am still £50 down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Get something in writing from the hire co stating that they have refunded £50 to card end, on x date.
If its not in your account 15 days after the date stated you can contact your card provider and get them to do a chargeback for non reciept of refund.
Thats assuming you have a visa debit card.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
OP you say that the deposit 'appeared briefly' on your online statement - have you checked to see it actually left your account as opposed to being earmarked?0

It definitely went out as we had to borrow it from daughter as we didn't get paid until the next day, and our account is still short.
And it is a visa debit card0 -

And it is a visa debit card
Does it show as a transaction on the statement, or is it just that the available balance is down by that amount?
I've had the latter many times when using a debit card abroad to check-in to hotels. The "deposit" is reserved by the hotel's system as a pending transaction, and so not available to spend in your bank account, although it doesn't appear as a line item on the statement. Think of it as an "IOU" that's being held by your bank - they reserve the money but until they know exactly how much it actually is they don't put the final transaction through.
This can take a few days, and sometimes I've had to wait 5 or 6 days for the "reserved" balance to be "unreserved" by my bank. Once, in fact, I had to phone through to get a sum released, when the initial sum reserved and the payment that actually was charged were different because of excahnge rates and so the bank's computer couldn't match them as being the same transaction.0
