Train Saver tickets

Options
Do they still exist.

Say you took train everyday (mon to friday) from town A to town B
Every week of the month for say a whole year.

Now you spend 10 on a return ticket every day, as you buy at the station.

As you using the service everyday is there a way to get like a "loyalty" or "frequent" user discount by buying for example a months worth of tickets upfront etc...?

  • Yes its called a season ticket. They come in weekly, monthly or yearly varieties. Take a passport photo to the station and ask for one, it is usually vastly cheaper than individual tickets especially if you travel at peak times.

  • Season tickets (unlimited journeys between Town A and Town B) have been around for ages and give a discount. E.g. an Anytime day return Reading-Paddington is £39.50, but a 7-day season ticket is £95.40. A greater saving can be made by purchasing an annual season ticket (where you effectively end up paying for only 45 or so weeks out of the 52)

Some train operators also offer 'carnet' tickets whereby you can buy 10 (usually off-peak) tickets for the price of 9.

The National Rail site, in particular this page, should have everything you need.

I can help with that... click here.
  • Worth noting that you can also buy a season ticket for any time period between a calendar month and a year inclusive. This can be handy to work around holidays or to take this year's ticket up to 30th December allowing you to buy next year's ticket on 31st December before the fares increase come in. The ticket would be valid all the way through to Dec 30th 2013 and you would get it all at this year's prices. It can be a big outlay but if you are able to get a 0% credit card there is savings to be had.
