Cheap second hand car - no logbook
Could someone please give me their opinion, to buy or walk away?
I have seen a car advertised locally (facebook). But seller has no logbook!
"never been in accident or had a crash its had 3 owners from new. i paid to have the reg checked before i bought it 5 month mot no tax and we dont have the log book bought tuesday for my hubby but it is to big for our first car its perfect drives amazing only thing is its got a scrape over the pass side rear wheel arch. waiting for the garage i got it from to bring me the log book."
I know nothing about cars and would pay a mechanic to go and look at it with me, as I don't know anyone who is good with cars. The only want £450 for it.
Thank you for any help!

£450 for a rusty old Metro is too much, whereas for a 2002 Astra it'd be a good price. Impossible to say if it's a good deal without a make or model of car...!0

Sounds dodgy. What happens when you want to go and buy the tax disc at the PO? - You'll be turned away with no V5.
You can get a replacement from DVLA at a cost but be warned, if the car is stolen they'll write to the current registered keeper advising them of it and you'll find the BiB coming to see you. You can do a HPI check on it to see if its a stolen car but again you still carry a small risk.
If it were me I'd walk away. It doesn't matter how nice the car is and how well it drives if its dodgy because it'll never be truly yours.
No log book, bought Tuesday and suddenly being resold = dodgy car. Plus it currently has no tax so again you're stuffed unless you buy it online (and if its reported as stolen the DVLA won't even take your money).
Avoid it at all costs.0 -
Thank you. I'll leave it and keep looking!0

IIRC last time I did this it was free. I called up and asked, they said to write a letter advising them I'd bought the car and they'd go from there.
Few weeks later, V5 and no charge. Not sure if it has changed recently?
Anyway, agree, if it walks like a duck etc and this sounds like one dodgy motor.
What exactly are you looking for OP and what budget? You might be able to get a few suggestions on here.

Forget it, no paperwork and selling because the wifes learning to drive/too big for her/got a broken leg just spells driveway dealer.0

Or they used it for a log book loan and has debts secured on it.

Hello again. Thank you for the help!
I'm looking for a cheap automatic (i passed in automatic), that is cheap for insurance (I am 46 and haven't driven for years, so need to build up my no claims bonus)
I need something to run for until I can afford to get something better.
Bus fares are £21, so would like to eventually have a decent car to get to work and not spend ages waiting around in the cold for late buses and can also use it for holidays etc. I know it will be dearer (my partner will be sharing the expense too)
Thank you for any help!0 -
The Hyundai Matrix is surely rather too large for someone who has just passed, and doesn't have a load of kids anyway isn't it?
I'd imagine that insurance would be quite high on these as well -- doesn't the engine range start at 1.6 16V?0 -
Logbook loan, It needs a VIC check, They dont really own it?
Or hiding the fact its had one careful owner and 47 not very careful owners in the last 2 years.
And a million and one other things. Not the sort of car i would look for to get cheap insurance.
You want something with a tiny engine or something oddball and cheap to fix for the insurance.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
