Kitten Food

Hi all,

I don't know if anyone can help me out here! I have two very hungry 5 month old kits that are costing a fortune to feed :) I love them dearly, but my purse hurts! Everytime I check the SM offers there seems to be offers on "big cat" food but not for little ones, I wondered if anyone knew anywhere to buy in bulk for under ones :) I'll always afford it, but anything to make it cheaper as am spending £100 or more a month on food and vet plan etc! I know the non pet owners are going to go "why'd you get them in the first place" but a house isn't a home without a pet lol xx

Many thanks

xx

  • £100 on cat food a month? really? how?!

we have a kitten, well a year old, and she hardly costs us a thing! a couple of bags of litter a month, and we feed her cat biscuits, not wet food. a lot cheaper and shes just as fine as she would be on wet food.

and we get whatever is cheap, on offer, or in the reduced section because its torn etc.

Ordinary cat food is fine, I've never used kitten food and my cats always seem to live to a ripe old age - mind you it's supplemented by mice and birds!
I'm sure it's just yet another marketing ruse to get you to spend more on something unnecessary, I saw cat milk the other day - has someone been milking a cat? How? Without being scratched to bits.

Just get whatever is on offer, you don't need kitten food, it's fine.

  • Mine have never had kitten food

They have a 12 pack of Classic, a huge box of Tesco dry food, and the odd bit of chicken, tuna etc

    Why is it £100?
  • To be honest, we've raised several hundred kittens on ordinary cat food, kitten food is just so expensive that we just save it for kittens that have come in poorly. Years ago there was no such thing as kitten food, and cats still lived to a ripe old age. I'd say that you were best healthwise spending money on neutering, microchipping vaccinating, worming and defleaing etc.

ps they are old enough to be neutered now- at 5months they are well old enough to get pregnant or develop spraying/straying/fighting habits depending on gender.

  • The £100 mentioned includes a very sensible vet plan (mentioned in the original post)

  • My kitten is on one of the better kitten foods, Royal Canin 10kg sack which is upto 12 months. This sack will last till she is 12 months and works out im feeding her for less that cheap supermarket food. Its a dry food and works out at costing something like 6pence per day and she has it unlimited.

Zoo plus have 2 x 10kg sacks for under 80.00 but also have a 10% off code too.
  • Thanks for all the useful tips, moggymutt you are right, paying about £26 in vet plan that includes all defleaing and worming for both for 12 months plus two consultations each also including pet insurance and "accidental" (easier for me to budget) They're just at the stage where they're eating rather a lot as they're growing faster than the speed of light! The boy goes in tomorrow to be "de stoned" for want of a better phrase- doing him early before little miss starts to cycle and she will be sorted next month at 6 months. I will see how I get on with some "big cat" food, was just hoping that I didn't upset their little tummies- probably being too over cautious!! Many thanks all xx
  • Glad to hear that your boy is getting done. Adult food is less rich than kitten food, so if you stick to the same brand there should be no tummy upsets at all.
