This is where a buddy used to drink before it closed down earlier this year. It is pretty substantial albeit, needs a good refurb .

He was telling me it was an Ushers tied tenancy and had been open well over 100 years. Popular and surrounded by chimney pots. About 9 years ago it was sold off to a pub co. As you do. A couple came into it at an eye watering £500 a week rent but free of drinks tie.

The company tried to sell it some 3 years ago for £350,000 but no takers. The couple that had it just ran out of cash. For a while someone had a cheap rent until it was boarded up. I was amazed to see the asking price is now £90, 000.

This, it seems, is one of many in the area. http://www.edwardsymmons.com/property-search?task=getitem&region=10287&property_item_id=3410091

Welcome to the world of property value, if you take off the 'residential tax'.
  • The reason is wet pubs are a dying trade, particularly the 'local' type.

Gone are the days when men would go down the pub a couple of times a week for a few swifties. They are simply too expensive now.

It's much cheaper to get a pack of beer from the supermarket or corner shop and have a few drinks at home.

    Societal changes happening.
  • Case in point, I got 12 bottles of carling zest for £6 from morrisons, 50p a bottle! It's only 2.8% but that's actually good as it stops me getting !!!!ed (plus it passes scotland's 50p a unit minimum pricing - though I dunno if that's actually law yet)

If you know what you are doing there is still plenty of cash to be made, here is a new pub being renovated from an old dilapidated building in Chester, not only will it be a real money spinner but it will return a fine building back into use.

Even cheaper if you get the beer and wine in France, and the gin in Spain. Another advantage of drinking at home is that you meet a better class of person.

Is it really still that much cheaper? I used to do the booze run on a regular basis, picking up a dozen cases at a time. I haven't done it for five years, as I found decent Supermarket wine wasn't much difference than buying in Calais? Maybe beers and Spirits are cheaper?

Even cheaper if you stay at home and drink milk.

I will say I see no attraction to going and sitting in the local pub.

i don't think i could fit the mrs in the waste bin so there's not much point looking in there (in case she is reading this, i hasten to add this is because the bin is very small).
