    not as simple as that.
Right click on cmd.exe (or the command prompt in the start menu) and select run as administrator may help.

    shutdown /m \\]remote_computer_name or IP] /s /f /d p:0:0 /t 00

    Shutdown - the command
/m \\computername or IP - indicates the target to shutdown
/s - shutdown (not restart or log off)
/f - force running applications to close
/d - reason for shutdown for event log
    p:0:0 - Planned shutdown (with /d) 0:0 major:minor event ID
/t 00 - time until shutdown, in this case 0 seconds so immediately.

You'll need to run the command as an administrator account on the remote machine so a runas might be needed.

The only SHUTDOWN.EXE switches you need are
    -m \\PCname
    -s
and if you want it to happen immediately
    -t 0
If PCname is running 'stuff' you might need to use
    -f
    but that isn't really recommended!
(the - is an alternative to /)

The difficulty, as people say above, is to get it to run remotely on PCname...

Enable remote desktop on her computer.
Log into her computer from yours (with remote desktop).
    Run 'shutdown /s' from cmd.

How about retraining the wife instead? "When you finish ironing, do you leave the iron switched on? Think of the computer as a clever iron" ;-)

I created a shortcut and put this in the "target" field to shut down my PC named PrintSvr:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -m \\PrintSvr -s

A double-click shuts down PrintSvr remotely.

This is on XP, so the path to shutdown.exe may differ, and you may need to explicitly set the shortcut to run with Administrator privileges.

look at the pc power saving settings and fix the hibernation problem instead -

if it's set to allow sleep, switch to hibernate.

    powercfg -h on

    from the command prompt.

Also check the monitor and printer power save settings.
